Market for National eID’s exceeds that of Traditional National ID’s
Today, National eID issuing countries just exceed those issuing traditional National IDs. By 2015, the number of National eID issuing countries will exceed those issuing traditional National IDs by a ratio of more than 4 to 1. This dramatic market shift form Traditional National IDs to National eIDs. In 2010 53% of countries issuing National IDs issued eIDs, but by 2015 81% of issuing countries will issue eIDs
The total number of National IDs issued annually will reach a plateau of
just under 850 million units by 2012, and then drop down to sustainable level of roughly 690 million
by 2015 when 85% of these credentials will be eIDs.
This rapidly evolving dominance of eIDs reflects the global drive towards eGovernment and eCommerce services enabled by electronic identities. This transformation will provide substantial opportunities as national, regional, and ultimately global transaction infrastructures secured by a trusted eID platform emerge over the next five to ten years.
